History

Kenji is the son of the Eighth Mizukage, Hirohata Soujirou, and the brother of the Tenth Mizukage, Hirohata Megumi. When he was three years old, his mother, Yuki, died of a terrible illness, leaving him and his sister, Megumi, with only their father. However, Kenji often considers himself the reason his mother actually died. It was one hot summer afternoon, and he had wanted to go to the park to feed the ducks. His mother was in bed, stricken with her horrid sickness. His father had been taking care of his Kage duties, while his sister was at the Academy.

That left only his mother, and being only three he did not quite understand the concept that Yuki needed bedrest. He begged his mother to go to the park that day. Not wanting to disappoint her son, she wearily got out of bed and dressed. Despite the heat and despite the fact that she could barely stand, Yuki took her son to the park that day. And while they were there, while Kenji was tossing some bits of bread into the pond for a family of ducks, she collapsed. He did not quite understand what had been going on, or why his mother had fallen and was then quickly taken away to the hospital, but what Kenji did know was that several hours later, she was dead. That he could understand.

One year after his mother had died, more tragedy struck. While away on a mission for the village, their father fell victim to an ambush attack. Though he put up a valiant fight, he could not escape and was killed. News arrived back at Kiri several days later, devastating both Megumi and Kenji, who were now orphans. From then on, Kenji was raised by his sister, Megumi, who took care of him and helped train him for the Academy, all the while working for the village in her own shinobi position, eventually becoming Mizukage herself. Kenji has a deep care for his sister because of this, and looks up to her as a role model, doing everything he can to gain her approval.

In the years that followed, Kenji would rapidly rise through the shinobi ranks, much in thanks to the tutelage given to him by his sister. Since Megumi was the Mizukage at this point and personally training him, it was only natural that he soon became one of the strongest shinobi in the village, as well as apprenticed to be the next Mizukage. Eventually, after deciding that Kenji was more fit for the job than she was, Megumi retired from the position and promoted Kenji to Mizukage, now working as his personal assistant.
