| “Do you think that girl will be okay?” Sonya asked, wondering about the girl they had found in the desert the other day. She still hadn't awoken, and was currently in the hospital being treated for heat stroke and dehydration. They weren't sure if the girl would survive.
“Well, I would hope so,” Hachi said, looking through his binoculars into the distance. All that was out there right now was sand, sand, and more sand. “It would be a great testament to just how good the medical treatment is here in Suna. I mean, we did survive a plague and all.”
Sonya pursed her lips slightly, then looked through her own pair of binoculars. “I suppose you're right. I mean, I came here in pretty much the same condition, and I turned out alright. Anyway, you see anything?”
“Nothing yet... just remember, we're only here to scout, that's it,” Hachi reminded. “If we see anything, we're to report back immediately, not engage.”
“Right...” Sonya said, with a slow nod.
There had been reports of marauders recently attacking the borders, but no one could tell them for sure. Anyone who was attacked and managed to get away all described being assaulted, but they didn't know by who, or what. They all claimed to have slowly drifted towards what felt like a very relaxing sleep, just before the attack begun. That was the issue; marauders were not shinobi, and could not produce genjutsu like that. This meant that they were either rogue ninja, or had hired rogue ninja to work for them. Either way, they had to make certain what they were dealing with before attempting to subdue the mystery assailants.
It had taken about five days to get to the border, so they were quite a ways away from Suna. They had had to pack for the occasion, bringing along enough stores of food and water to last them the trip there and back, though already they were running low. Hachi had offered to use his flying rock technique to make the journey faster... but ever since the previous incident, Sonya had refused to get back on the thing. Still, she might be forced to use it for the trip back, if their supplies ran out. For now, though, she didn't worry about it. Instead, she merely wiped a bead of sweat from her brow and continued watching.
Her time in Suna had been pretty okay so far, nothing bad, nothing special. It was better than Iwa, though, she had to admit. While she wasn't born here, and didn't have as many friends as in Iwa, there were no stinging, painful memories here... at least not yet anyway. The village was also not in a state of destruction and disrepair, as Iwa was after the quake. There were actually things to do around Suna besides rebuilding the place. She absolutely adored the cold springs, her favorite way to relax and unwind after a long day. The desert heat was brutal, and those cold springs were an amazing break from that.
Speaking of the heat, Sonya had come to gain quite the tan since arriving at Suna, all pale skinned and pasty. She didn't get sun burns anymore, at least on the areas that were tan. She wasn't that risque, after all, and didn't tan without a swimsuit on. So, she did have tan lines, but they were at least minimal. She actually thought she looked quite hot with a tan... and the tan lines added a little something extra.
“Hey, over there,” Hachi said, pointing.
Called back from her thoughts, Sonya scanned the horizon where he was pointing. There, she saw several hooded figures marching in a straight line. Correction, not several; it looked more like a dozen. Those had to be the marauders, and with them were three other people not dressed in the billowing robes. Those three were dressed like shinobi. Activating her sharingan, she could see that the even moved like shinobi, every little twitch they made, every little sway of the arms, all purposeful, and on guard the entire time. They seemed like highly skilled ninja.
A closer look with her sharingan revealed a flickering aura surrounding them; chakra. One of the shinobi was using a jutsu to surround them, though of what nature she didn't know. Possibly one to keep the heat away from the group? Or something more sinister, perhaps.
“Those are definitely our guys,” Sonya said, giving a slow nod. “Traveling due east, along the border. Likely looking for more travelers to attack and steal from.
“Affirmative,” Hachi said, pulling his binoculars down. “Alright, let's get moving back to Suna and report. We'll see what they want us to do from here.”
“How will we find them again, though?” Sonya asked, glancing at him.
Hachi started making hand signs. “Don't worry, I got it covered.” From the surrounding desert, a mass of earth and stone rose up from beneath the sand and formed a clone. “My clone will keep tabs on them from a safe distance. Problem is, it won't last long with how far we have to go... five days on foot and it will certainly dissipate. We're going to need to make the trip in a few hours.”
Sonya sweat dropped. “You don't mean...”
“Yup,” he replied, making another hand sign and forming large levitating rock. “Just be sure to hold on tightly this time.”
“Son of a....”
