Training SessionsSessions in the training grounds earns you Training Points (TP) equal to the number of words you write. You can store these points up and spend them at any time to learn jutsus, so long as you buy the scroll or are being taught by someone else. Remember that you don't have to be specifically training for any one jutsu (although you can if you want). Anything you do in the training grounds, whether it be a team exercise, solo training, sparring, etc. will earn you TP. You also gain TP during fights of any kind, regardless of where they take place, using the same 1:1 ratio as the training grounds. Wandering and Missing-nin, too, acquire the same TP gain from anything they write outside a major village, since they do not have training grounds to access.
Each rank of jutsu requires a certain amount of Training Points to learn
D requires 100 TP
C requires 200 TP
B requires 400 TP
A requires 800 TP
S requires 1600 TP

MissionsDoing missions earns you ryo, Advancement Points (AP), and Training Points. Each mission rank requires a certain amount of words to complete (the values are the total amount required, so the more people involved in the mission, the less each person needs to write).
D requires 200 words to complete
C requires 500 words to complete
B requires 800 words to complete
A requires 1200 words to complete
S requires 1400 words to complete
Rewards for each mission rank are as followed:
D gives 100 ryo, 1 AP, and 100 TP
C gives 400 ryo, 2 AP, and 400 TP
B gives 1000 ryo, 3 AP, and 1000 TP
A gives 1600 ryo, 4 AP, and 1600 TP
S gives 2500 ryo, 5 AP, and 2500 TP
These rewards are not split between those participating in the mission. Each person in the mission gains the listed rewards.
And as you can see here:
certain rank missions are restricted to certain level ninja. Make sure you take the proper rank mission for your level.

What are Advancement Points?Advancement Points (AP), are what a character needs to earn in order to advance in ninja rank. AP is most commonly earned by completing missions, but can also be earned in other ways, such as special events or sagas that you participate in.
Genin require 10 AP to qualify for the Chuunin Exams
Chuunin require 25 AP to be promoted to Special Jounin
Special Jounin require 50 AP to be promoted to Jounin
Jounin require 75 AP to be promoted to Sannin (They gain the title only if there are spots open in the village, otherwise they only gain Sannin benefits)
Sannin require 100 AP to gain Kage benefits
Keep in mind that when you advance in rank, your AP is reset to 0. So, once becoming advancing to Chuunin from Genin, you will require another 25 AP to advance to Special Jounin, rather

What is ryo?Ryo is the currency in the Narutoverse. It is used to buy things such as weapons or jutsu scrolls. Ryo is earned through the completion of missions, as well as through weekly allowance. Also, each character, when created, begins with a certain amount of ryo that can be used to purchase starting items:
Genin start with 200 ryo
Chuunin start with 400 ryo
Special Jounin start with 600 ryo
Jounin start with 800 ryo
Sannin start with 1000 ryo
Kage start with 1200 ryo
Each ninja of those specific ranks also gains the same amount per week as their weekly allowance.
