History

Toshiyuki (Yuki to his mother and few friends) led, for the most part, a fairly normal life; His parents were both Shinobi of the Sand - His mother was a Jōnin who specialized in information-gathering and intelligence. his father, a Jōnin, was an expert in taijutsu who retired after a particularly tricky mission caused him to lose his left leg below the knee.

Yuki was born shortly after this incident, so he was raised primarily by his father, who began early on to teach him the basics of ninjutsu, laying the foundation for what he would go on to learn at the Academy. After a time, his mother, in her rare free moments, began to pitch in as well, and his parents began testing him informally in different aspects of what it means to be shinobi.
Interestingly, Toshiyuki proved to be extremely poor at casting genjutsu, but excelled in taijutsu like his father. This became especially apparent once he entered the Academy; He also began to learn ninjutsu, quickly learning the Clone, Body Flicker, and Substitution techniques. He proved skilled in unarmed combat and took to using tonfa, which rapidly became his weapon of choice. During his time at the Academy, it was discovered that he had a distinct affinity towards Wind-style techniques, and he began training this new talent. Toshiyuki was greatly interested in the history of the Sand Village, particularly the Fifth Kazekage. Among his role models as a child was the wind user Temari - a contemporary of the Fifth's - and he worked hard to develop a variant of her old signature technique.
Toshiyuki's mother, meanwhile, was descended in long line from a Leaf Village kunoichi who had fled Konoha following the outbreak of civil war after the death of its most famous Hokage, Naruto Uzumaki. Stories about the Leaf and its "Orange Hokage" had been told in the family since then, and Toshiyuki found them fascinating, especially in light of the fact that, as he was pleasantly surprised to learn, Naruto also been a Wind-style user.
His distinct preference towards Taijutsu also led him to pay some attention to Naruto's lifelong rival, the criminal rogue ninja Sasuke Uchiha. Though there was less information to be had about him, there was enough for Toshiyuki to get a good idea of what he had been like, and Yuki did not like him at all. He found interesting that Sasuke had excelled in taijutsu originally, but had later become more heavily dependent on his dōjutsu, which Toshiyuki disliked, as he dislikes all dōjutsu users in general. But in particular he found a taijutsu move of Sasuke's especially interesting. Toshiyuki, always looking to improve himself, decided he would learn it. From then on in addition to his course work he worked as hard as possible until, in his final year at the Academy, he mastered it.
During his time at the Academy, Toshiyuki got along well with everyone and made a few good friends, but didn't really have a steady girlfriend - a large part of the reason for that being that he developed, fairly early on, a major crush on an older student, which he kept quiet for the most part. This also provided part of his motivation for working so hard, and on one occasion when an older student began to pick on some of his classmates, he took great pleasure in showing off his new taijutsu technique for all present - including the girl in question - on the unsuspecting bully. The demonstration broke three of his ribs and shattered his left collarbone. Toshiyuki was congratulated by his taijutsu instructor, chastised by most of his other teachers and - which pleased him the most - complimented on his execution of a high-level jutsu by his crush.
Eventually, she graduated the Academy and moved on. Yuki himself devoted himself to completing his studies and, despite still being extremely poor at handling genjutsu, graduated well at last.
Having left the Academy, he was now a Genin, and ready to take on the world...
